Luggage

We tend to keep a hodgepodge of luggage from all stages in our lives, which can consume an awful lot of space. A purge is important here.

• Pull out everything in the home that you travel or cart stuff with.

• If you didn’t already go through this step in chapter 2, get rid of all your piles of freebie tote bags, with the exception of those that you use often for groceries and other kinds of hauling.

• Toss any random duffel bags and travel bags that you’ve acquired over the years but don’t use anymore.

• Toss all broken luggage —anything ripped, or with a damaged wheel or zipper.

• Consider the maximum number of pieces your family would need on a trip —and the pieces they actually use—and that’s the amount you should keep, no more.

In terms of organization and storage location, if you have a frequent business traveler in your home, then it makes sense to keep his or her carry-on in a handy location. That could be a closet shelf—preferably at an accessible height—or on the floor of the front coat closet, if you have the room. All other less often used baggage can be stored inside of each other: A carry-on bag can be tucked inside a larger suitcase, and so on. These bags can be placed on the uppermost shelf in a closet. Even better, if you have a storage unit, attic, or basement, keep them there.
